I have a nice Toshiba DVD player. Well, as far as I know, when it comes to buying DVD's to play......I know enough not to buy ones for a BLUE RAY player! Well, I recently bought one and it won't work, grrrr! Then I looked at the small writing on the back at the bottom and it says......"For use in HD DVD players only". I thought there were only 2 kinds of DVD players......regular and Blue Ray. I am clueless and would appreciate any HELP someone can give me about this

Regular dvds show standard output such as through old regular tv's: NTSC (780) I think. They came out with the HD dvd much like HD TV's with the new 1080i resolution, but. So the HD dvds were supposed to match that, but I think they're somewhat obsolete now, unless you have a hd dvd player (which may still be sold, but I'm not sure). HD dvds are replaced by (I know, I shouldn't say it) Blue Ray. So you'd either have to get a blue ray player to play your HD dvd disc, find a regular dvd version of the movie you bought, or buy a hd dvd player if it's still around. Blue Ray is awesome though
.
1no clue either. I´ll take note of what GScott86 is saying, just in case.
2There was a massive DVD battle between HD and BR. BR won. Believe it or not the top rated Blue Ray player is a Playstation 3. So you can get a game console and DVD player all at once. Take the machine back and give them a stern look and say "you should have told me this only worked with an HD TV and that BR has replaced it format wise." If it is a recent purchase they should take it back.

GScott answered the question for all of us ... whoo hoo !!
11I think GScott knows best. It's confusing now a days.

I wish I could help but I am clueless. Good luck
13I'm glad you posted this because I learned something new today! I have been confused about this. Will all DVD's eventually be Blue Ray I wonder?
14I have the answer to this, unfortunately. There are (were) three kinds of DVD players - HD DVD, Blu Ray, regular DVD. Only an HD DVD player can play HD DVDs. Only a Blu Ray player can play Blu Ray DVDs. Any of them can play a regular DVD.
Blu Ray and HD DVD had a war and Blu Ray won in early 2008. HD DVD players are no longer being sold and no more HD DVDs are being made. I know this all because I have a stupid HD DVD player!!! Oh well, at least the HD DVDs I have look awesome.
15i'd love to help u, but have no clue about this.!
16There are dvd players, Blue ray and HD, HD is out of date so their shouldnt be any dvds out with HD unless they are old. Can you return the dvd?
17Oh, come on... I just got used to CD's! I thought the HD was the thing of the TV future. You know, when your TV will go BLANK if you ain't got one.
Seriously, I play DVD's on my computer. So far, they all work.
18I am completely clueless about these things. I just have a regular DVD player. I know they make HD players and Blu-Ray players, but I didn't know there were HD specific movies for those??? Electronics are confusing.
19I got so confused for a second merely based on the jargon being thrown around... I didn't know if you were asking about an HD DVD player that you purchased or an HD DVD movie. I got it now. You bought a movie! LOL. Yeah, I say take the movie back and have them exchange it or something. If that type of player is discontinued, so should the movies.

20I'm taking note of what GScot86 said...I had NO idea!!!
21I'm taking notes as well. I never had this issue happen to me.
22Thank you all so very much for taking the time to comment on this for me! I have learned a lot
