I am looking into getting my first DSLR. I've hold out on getting one before because I thought my normal point and shoot was enough, but on a recent trip to Orlando, I noticed that I really wanted to capture a lot more, and at a faster speed and my point and shoot just couldn't handle it.
I have narrowed my choices to two popular models the Nikon D90 and the Canon EOS 50D. I want a camera that will last me at least 5 years.
The Nikon D90's video capability sounds sweet, and I have heard that Nikon's color quality is much richer than Canon's, but the EOS 50D's faster shutter speed makes it awesome to me too.
Anyways since I want something that will last me longer, I need opinions on which company has better lenses and such. Please help me out.

I have the Nikon D40 and it is absolutely amazing.
My husband did a ton of research before buying it and found that the D40 was the best bang for the buck.
He used this Web site to help him with the decision. www.kenrockwell.com/
Unless you're completely sold on spending that much, you may want to read what he has to say.
1I would look into the Panasonic Lumix cameras or see if you can get Lumix lenses for whatever camera you choose. The reason I say this is because I have never see such clarity and color from any other type of lens. All of the pictures I have taken with the Lumix lens are just awesome - even on my point and shoot that has a built in Lumix lens. We have an older Canon Rebel-XT SLR that has lasted for several year with no problems (4 years no I think - might be longer). I have no experience with a Nikon D40 but prior to meeting my husband I was an avid Nikon user because my point-n-shoot cameras took awesome pix!!!
